My Sister Is Not In, by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema
A young woman is preventing a suitor from entering into their home to pay a visit to her sister. The coy sister, however, has nudged up against the side of a chair to secretly listen to the young man's affectionate pleas.
Some of my favorite subtle details: -The man's fingers peeking through. -The word "SALVE" ("Welcome") on the ground. -The coy girl's feet. Can you figure out the significance of each? Also, there's a detail I'm not sure about... Is that a sleeping cupid statue on the arm of the chair?  Click on images for larger versions! |  |
